Kerala’s police are taking a significant step in the fight against illegal cryptocurrency activities by acquiring a specialized blockchain-analysis tool. This new technology will enhance the state’s cyber-investigation division’s ability to track and monitor cryptocurrency transactions, making it easier for officers to identify suspicious dealings linked to illicit activities such as money laundering, drug trafficking, and terrorism.
The New Blockchain-Analysis Tool
Developed by an Israeli firm, the Rs 45 lakh tool is expected to be installed at the Cyberdome Lab in Kochi by mid-December 2024. This advanced tool will provide a comprehensive view of cryptocurrency transactions, offering police officers a more effective method of detecting illegal activity.
While India has become a global leader in crypto adoption, Kerala has also seen an increase in cryptocurrency usage. Most of the transactions are legitimate, but there are growing concerns about the potential misuse of virtual assets for unlawful purposes. Previously, Kerala’s police lacked specialized tools and had to rely on open-source resources to analyze suspicious crypto transactions. However, these open-source tools only allowed for a linear analysis of transactions, which was both time-consuming and resource-heavy.
Improved Efficiency for Cyber Investigations
The new chain-analysis tool will significantly improve the efficiency of crypto investigations. Unlike the linear methods previously employed, the tool offers a panoramic view of cryptocurrency transactions, allowing investigators to trace the flow of virtual assets across the globe. This is crucial in identifying illicit activity, particularly when funds are funneled to countries involved in financial fraud or terrorism.
For instance, if investigators find funds being transferred to a country like Cambodia, known for financial fraud, the tool can quickly flag these transactions for further scrutiny. This will help authorities track illegal operations much more effectively than before.
Key Features of the Chain-Analysis Tool
One of the notable features of the tool is its ability to access detailed information about crypto wallets, nodes, and exchanges involved in suspicious transactions. The firm behind the tool has indexed thousands of wallets and exchanges, making it easier for investigators to gather critical details during an investigation.
This new technology will be a game-changer in the state’s efforts to combat illegal cryptocurrency deals, providing law enforcement with the tools they need to stay ahead of criminals exploiting the digital asset market.
